Splitting is how you get at the middle of a video. Put the playhead where the cut belongs, press S, and one clip becomes two independent clips you can trim, reorder, delete or treat differently.

It is also the fastest way to remove an interruption — split before it, split after it, delete the piece in between.

How to split video online

  1. 01

    Add your video

Drop the file onto the page to open it on the timeline.

  2. 02

    Position the playhead

Drag on the ruler, or use the transport, to park the playhead exactly where the cut should land.

  3. 03

    Split

Press S or use the Split button. The clip becomes two.

  4. 04

    Delete or rearrange

Select the piece you don't want and delete it, or drag the pieces into a different order.

Removing a section from the middle

Split at the start of the unwanted section and again at its end, then select the middle piece and delete it. With ripple mode on, the clips after it slide left to close the gap so there is no black hole in the export.

With ripple mode off, the gap stays — useful when you want a deliberate pause and plan to fill it with something else.

Splitting into separate exports

The editor exports one video per project. To turn one recording into several separate files, split it, delete everything but the piece you want, export, then undo back to the full timeline and repeat for the next piece.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a video online?

Add the video, move the playhead to the point where you want the cut and press S. The clip becomes two clips you can edit separately.

Can I split a video into more than two parts?

Yes. Each split produces two clips, and you can split any of them again as many times as you need.

Why is the Split button greyed out?

A split has to leave a usable clip on both sides, so it is disabled when the playhead sits on a clip boundary. Move the playhead a little further into the clip.
